UPDATE: House Explodes in Dayton
DAYTON -- A house explosion was heard across the west side of Dayton. The home is leveled, but the good news is, no one was seriously hurt.
"We heard a big explosion. wood and debris came up on our house. for a minute there, we thought somebody was breaking in," said Roderick who rushed outside to find a neighborhood home leveled on Brooklyn Ave.
The blast was so powerful, it damaged 47 homes around it, most had blown out windows.
"Some of the homes could be ten homes away from this structure and can still have some damage. So it is a very large scene," said Asst. Chief Michael Caudill with the Dayton Fire Department.
The driver of this truck was riding by.
"Somebody's house just blew up over here.. It almost blew up my truck," the man said to the 911 dispatcher.
The gas was on at the home, but no one has lived there for about a year. Investigators say they are looking into suspicious activity around the home just before and soon after the explosion.
"I didn't know what it was, I was shook up, I'm still shook up just a bit," said Melvin Moultry, who lives nearby.
The owner actually lives next door. His home is so badly damaged, it will have to be torn down. Vectren crews immediately got the gas shut off, as firefighters reported a strong odor when they got to the rubble. Investigators spent much of the day sifting through the debris, as they try to piece together what triggered the explosion. Vectren crews joined them.
"We need to sure we take care of and make safe our natural gas assets, of course we've turned off the gas at that home, at the home next door, just made sure the scene is safe from a natural gas standpoint," said Colleen Ryan, President of Vectren Ohio.
Even among all this damage, people are looking at the bright side.
"Very lucky, somebody could have easily been hurt," said a Moultry.
It will likely take several days for crews to determine a cause. Reps with insurance companies were out for most of the day surveying the damage, and it is unclear if the owner had insurance.
DAYTON -- A home explodes in Dayton, leveling the structure and damaging at least 28 other houses in the area.
The intersection of Kammer of Brooklyn avenues are littered with debris, including window parts.
"We had a big explosion, wood and debris came up on our house. For a minute there we though someone was breaking in the house. By that time we came up here and we saw this house over here had exploded," said a neighbor named Roderick who was laying in bed.
The home has been vacant for about a year, but the owner lives next door. His home is so badly damaged, he cannot go back inside because it is not structurally safe. He talked to our crews off camera, saying he has smelled gas a few times and has called Vectren to come out. Vectren Ohio President Colleen Ryan said they have never had a call for that address, and the last time they were in the neighborhood was 2013 for a minor gas leak.
Fire fighters and investigators are still going door to door to determine the extent of the damage.
