Local Groups Asks Community to Stop the Violence
DAYTON -- A plea to the community of Dayton from a local group.
"These days of us-against-them, and seeing all police as our enemy, this cannot be," Rev. Jerome McCorry said.
After several homicides and the murder of a young mother, a local group is urging the community to fight back against the violence.
Tuesday night, dozens of people are expected to stand outside Ele' Bakery to honor Nichelle McKnight.
She used to work there and her co-workers want to honor her memory, and out of their grief one local group is hoping a change will come.
"I think we must remember her, but I also think we must use it as a call to stop this madness," said Rev. McCorry, president of the Adam Project. "She should become the face of the day our city decided to change."
Change for a mother, Nichelle McKnight, and her son Zaden, who went missing for weeks before Nichelle's body was found along the Stillwater River.
Police believe the man responsible, Antwan Anderson, shot and killed himself when police tried to capture him.
"We're here today, out of frustration, out of hurt, out of pain," said Rev. McCorry.
He's talking about several incidents in the past few weeks that involved gun violence on the streets of Dayton, including the shooting and killing of Aaron Smith, over a dispute on the basketball court.
"When 100 or more people witness a homicide and do not cooperate with the police, we take that very personally at the Adam Project, and so we're calling on this community to cooperate," said Rev. McCorry.
"It's just crazy for people to commit crimes and it's even worse when the community doesn't pull together to stop it because it continues to go on," said Kimberly Arnold of Dayton.
The community pulled together, in the Nichelle McKnight case, which was crucial for police.
"The public was actually helpful in alerting this missing case was likely a homicide so the public has been all along with us in this case," Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl.
"If we live in a community where the citizens don't seem to care, you can't expect much from the police.," said Rev. McCorry. "We must step up, we must do it together and that's what we're calling on this community to do."
Every year the Adam Project group hosts block parties.
This year, they are dedicating all block parties to Nichelle, and will have a balloon launch in her memory as well.
