Push for Ohioians to Get Health Coverage
DAYTON -- A last push for those who haven't signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.
"Having healthy people makes healthy families and healthy families makes a healthy community so this is a great building block for our community," said Mayor Nan Whaley, City of Dayton.
Dayton's Mayor Nan Whaley welcomed U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to talk about the Affordable Care Act.
"What everybody pays, is really based on whether you qualify for financial help or not and whether you're in the private market or in medicaid," said Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius.
The deadline to sign up is looming, just two weeks from Monday.
And still, 103,000 people in Dayton are eligible for health coverage.
So far, 175,000 people in Ohio have signed up, which is something that makes Dr. Donald Nguyen happy.
"I have seen first hand when patients do not have health insurance and how they can be discriminated against," said Dr. Donald Nguyen, private physician.
On the flip side, we spoke to Joe Poekling back in October.
"We can't comply with the way the Affordable Care Act is set up, and the insurance rates that we've been told that we're going to have are going to go up," said Joe Poelking, in October 2013.
Joe owns four local bowling alleys in the area. In October, he was looking to cut his full time employee hours because he couldn't afford their health insurance.
"Who it's really hurting, it's really hurting the common worker out there," said Poelking.
But today, he says they were able to work out two options for their employees and their coverage.
And no one's hours had to be cut.
Still questions loom for locals about the affordability of the affordable care act.
"Most of the people here in Ohio, who are uninsured and eligible will qualify for financial help depending on their income and the size of their family their premium is going to vary," said Secretary Sebelius.
