Fans and Alumni Standing Behind the Flyers

DAYTON -- Dayton's Cinderella season came to an end Saturday night as they went down to the #1 overall ranked Florida Gators 62-52.

Before the game even began, Flyer fans could be heard loud around campus.

"Your heart just blows up with this team," said UD Alumni Amanda Paul. "This team is incredible. It brings everyone together and we all support our Flyers together. Watching them have the season of their lives is incredible. i don't even go here anymore but I came back to support our team."

As you were watching the game you may have seen the 400 UD students and faculty who flocked into UD's recreation center to cheer on the Elite 8 team. TBS cameras showed the Flyer cheers from time to time.

"A lot of rowdy fans and a lot of rowdy students we love our flyers," said Daarynah Willoughby a UD freshman who works in the ticket office.

"I remember way back when I was very young in '67 when we made it to the final four," said campus minister Tom Pieper whose forefathers founded UD.

With Florida taking a commanding lead at half, fans stayed optimistic.

"I'm hoping after halftime we'll go in the locker room, have a little pep talk and realize we need to stay close. I think we got this," said Willoughby.

"I'm hoping we're gonna come back. We've been down before. We can do it again," said Pieper.

UD made a slight come back, but eventually the game slipped away. Still even after the final buzzer, the cheers continued.

"I'm so proud of my friends. I'm so proud of my team," said Willoughby.

Many were on the verge of tears watching the great season come to an end

"We were like don't cry," said UD student Heather Glanville. I would've started crying."

"We're really proud of them, they made it to the elite 8," said UD student Maggie Wagner.

Police were making their presence known since 5:30 p.m. Saturday patrolling the entire campus by car and by foot. There were a few people who came to Kiefaber Street, buy it was not the scene we've seen the last few games.

Earlier Coverage:

DAYTON -- Right now things are fairly mellow on the U.D. campus, but the students are out. They are awaiting tonight's 6:09 tip-off against the #1 overall seed, the Florida Gators.

People are obviously excited about tipping off against Florida in the Elite 8, but the concern is what happens after the game, especially after 28 people were arrested after Thursday night's victory over Stanford.

There's no telling what this street will look like in a few hours if UD overcomes Florida.  We did catch up with a couple of Flyer fans who drove up today to support their favorite team as they get ready for tonight's tip off.

"We just beat Ohio State, Syracuse, we're still dancing," said  U.D. alumni Mike Glaser.

"Your heart just blows up with this team," said UD alumni Amanda Paul. "This team is incredible.  It brings everyone together and we all support our Flyers together.  Watching them have the season of their lives is incredible.  I don't even go here anymore but I came back to support our team."

The official U.D. watch party is at the University's recreation complex. They open at around 5:30 pm.  Between the Rec Plex and all the restaurants and bars around town, the Flyers have definitely captivated their town tonight.
