St. Patrick's Day Crackdown at U.D.
DAYTON -- Campus crackdown! The University of Dayton is taking steps right now to keep St. Patrick's Day celebrations from erupting into another riot.
U.D. has already sent letters to every student explaining the additional safety precautions that will be enforced over St. Patty's weekend. Students living in the dorms won't be allowed to have any guests, and campus parking lots will be closed to all outsiders.
Last year, St. Patrick's Day quickly spiraled out of control when more than a thousand people began smashing beer bottles and breaking out car windows.
"I don't think students are proud of what happened last year and it's not something we want to see happen again. It's just not what we're about and not something we're proud of," said U.D. student Sarah Dickson.
This year, the university is determined to prevent any campus chaos. Posters are being hung up all over campus reminding students about the code of conduct, and the consequences they could face if those expectations are violated. The University's message to students this St. Patty's Day is "Be Smart, Be U.D."
"Our goal and focus since last year has been to prevent another incident from occurring like that. It's not what U.D. is about and we don't want to see it occur again," said U.D. Police Chief Bruce Burt.
"We are aiming to keep our students safe and healthy and help them make responsible decisions so they can have fun," agreed Dean of Students, Chris Schramm.
Students also received letters, reminding them to carry their university ID at all times, follow the law, and make responsible decisions when it comes to alcohol.
"We have expectations that students will party responsibly. If they're going to celebrate the holiday, we ask they treat everybody with dignity and respect. That's one of the core values of the University of Dayton," Burt said.
U.D. police will have every officer working 12 hour shifts St. Patty's Day weekend. There will also be officers from the city of Dayton, Sinclair and Ohio Liquor Control helping out.
