Public Runs with "Baton" Social Media Account
DAYTON -- Have you ever wondered what the Miami Valley looks like from someone else's perspective? It's the idea behind a new social media account called "Dayton Baton."
It works just like it sounds, a user takes possession, runs with it, then hands it off to the next person. It's an Instagram account that pushes to a Twitter and Facebook handle under the same @DaytonBaton name, and it's run by the public.
"You see different things going on in the city," said the most recent "runner" of the account Jennifer Spraggs. "You see them through the eyes of different people and the Dayton residents."
When Spraggs ran the account, she started her day taking pictures in Piqua. Then posted from the Dayton Women's Pan-hellenic Brunch, then a beer festival at the Schuster Center. She ended the day posting a few photos from Warped Wing, a restaurant and bar in the Oregon District, while she was watching the Dayton Flyers beat Syracuse in basketball.
"Oh everybody loved it!" she said. "They were like 'We want these photos for our Facebook page!'"
"We wanted to give Dayton a view of what we bring to be able to benefit from having the First Four here," said Melissa Lykins, who helps run the Dayton Flyers brand.
The Flyers ran the Baton account at the start of the tournament to reach a wider range of fans.
"We covered Tuesday the floor starting to go down," Lykins said. "Then we did the control rooms where the big screens are for the games."
"I used to hear all the time, 'I'm so bored there's nothing to do in Dayton'," said recent Wright State graduate Jordan Hockett. He's a lifelong Dayton resident who created the account. "I think it's awesome that this account can kind of showcase things and events that are happening."
@DaytonBaton has gained more than 630 followers in less than three months. Account "runners" have ranged from businesses to non-profits, schools, and now a news station.
To sign up to run the account for a day, email email@example.com, then you can post your unique viewpoints from anywhere in the Miami Valley.
"I think the real benefit of the Dayton Baton at least for now is getting Dayton residents involved in Dayton," Spraggs added.
