Dramatic Video of School Bus Crash Caught on Camera
HARRISON TOWNSHIP -- Dramatic video of a school bus crash.
We had the only camera rolling as a car slid on an icy road and slammed into the moving bus.
That crash, and the slippery, dangerous conditions Thursday morning in Harrison Township are raising some eyebrows.
Crews responded to at least a dozen crashes and were forced to shut down a road.
It was an accident near the intersection of Needmore and Webster roads that shut down Needmore for about an hour.
An unsuspecting tow truck driver already cleaning up one crash was nearly caught in another one.
Our cameras were the only ones at the scene to catch the car sliding sideways on the ice and into a slow-moving school bus.
It was a chaotic scene on Harrison Township roads.
"Somebody hit us, somebody hit us, there's a car, and the lady's not..." said a woman on the school bus.
But this wasn't the only frantic call for help.
"She's trapped in the car. She's pretty badly hurt," said a man to 911 dispatchers.
"I was calling to report a three-car crash on Needmore Road," said a woman to 911 dispatchers.
"There was just an accident as I was getting out of my car at work," said a woman to 911 dispatchers.
All three 911 calls were for accidents on or near Needmore Road.
"The roads were solid iced over," said Eddied Holbrook, co-owner of the Paradise Key Cafe. "I mean, there was cars slipping and sliding everywhere. It was really bad."
Conditions were so bad firefighters had trouble walking on the ice-covered road while putting the injured woman in the back of an ambulance.
"It's never been that bad before, it's been covered with snow and stuff but this was just a thin layer of ice that was just very, very dangerous and treacherous to drive on," said Holbrook.
So, what caused the issue Thursday morning?
We asked Montgomery County Engineer Paul Gruner, whose road crews are responsible for salting that stretch of road.
"We responded when it happened but it was fairly unpredictable as to when and where the snow was going to come throughout the night," Gruner said.
He blames the pop-up snow squalls and blowing wind.
Crews also weren't able to pre-treat the roads, because it was raining before it turned to snow.
"The pre-treating would have been washed off, it would have been a wasted effort as we didn't really have any time between that and when the snow started to pretreat," said Gruner.
There were four kids on the school bus at the time, but none of them were seriously injured.
The woman in the car has been identified as Muride Cakir of Beavercreek.
She remains in critical condition.
We're told she wasn't wearing her seat belt.
