New Drug 5 to 10 Times Strength of Vicodin to Hit Pharmacy Shelves
DAYTON -- A new painkiller is five to ten times more powerful than Vicodin, and you will soon find it on pharmacy shelves. Zohydro is so potent, it could easily be deadly if the wrong person gets a hold of it.
Technicians are busy filling prescriptions at Tim's Pharmacy in Beavercreek. Much of what they fill are painkillers.
"Pain medications are needed. I'm not saying you shouldn't use pain meds but the abuse is there," said Pharmacist Ryan Beauchamp, who is particularly concerned about a new drug approved by the FDA called Zohydro. It is set to hit his shelves next month.
"It's going to be abused and people are going to die from it, it's just a matter of fact."
Zohydro's potency so worrisome, some experts fear first-time opioid users could overdose on just two pills, a teenager perhaps on just one dose. And what's more problematic, it is not tamper-resistant - something Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and other attorneys general have asked of the FDA.
"This drug has no built in use-deterrent like the Oxycontin does. So it's a crushable tablet. So the potential for abuse is extremely high," Beauchamp explains.
It really worries Rebecca Melton, who knows prescription pill abuse is already an epidemic in our community.
"It scares you because all the other drugs out here and kids get a hold of them because parents leave them hanging around, or you can just go up to friends and tell them you need something and (snap) right there it is," said Melton, who has young grandchildren.
Zohydro has caught the attention of the Montgomery County Alcohol Drug Addiction and Mental Health Board.
"The last thing this country needs is another drug that's going to be addicted or abused," said Ann Stevens, an ADAMHS spokesperson.
It is a chorus of voices now in the health care field, all raising concerns about Zohydro hitting pharmacy shelves.
