Trotwood Target Sees Busiest Day Since Black Friday Because of Protesters
TROTWOOD -- Trotwood area residents are fighting to keep the Target in their town. The Trotwood target was packed today, not just with shoppers, but protesters as well. Workers told us the store hadn't been so busy since Black Friday.
As crowds went in to Target to shop, crowds also gathered outside.
"Keep Target Open" the protesters chanted.
"I was totally devastated. We had no advanced notice. I shop at this store probably weekly and its' always busy over here. I had no idea they were going to close," said Martha Clark who has lived in Trotwood since 1968.
"With them not informing the city on the closure when they had just met with them a few days before and did not mention anything to them; they told them it was a good visit and then they just left," said Derrick L. Foward, President Dayton Unit NAACP. "And then a couple days later the city leaders end up finding out in the media. To me that's not good leadership from Targets' perspective."
Target reps want to close the store because they say it's not making the company any money. Target has not budged on their May 3rd closure date, meanwhile the petition signatures are starting to stack up.
"I started a petition on Change.org and I have about 2,200 signatures in a little over two weeks," said Clark. "Those signatures are not just Trotwood citizens, they are from Brookville, Clayton, Englewood, as far as Eaton. There is a market here and I wish Target would give us a chance."
"We're not traveling to Huber heights, we're not going down south of town. If there's no Target here, we're not going to go," said one petitioner.
"Despite some of the issues that happened with target we are still supporting them. I personally had to get a new credit card because I shopped at the store in that time yet I'm still supporting Target," said Clark.
We did reach out to Target by phone and email and have yet to hear from them.
Coming up tonight at 11, hear from Trotwood's city manager on what more he plans to do to keep Target in his city.
