Highway Patrol Blitzes Interstate in Weekend Enforcement
OHIO -- In an effort to keep the Miami Valley safer, troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol have been working through the weekend with five other states on a "blitz" to crack down on crime and crashes on the interstate.
Special enforcement on Interstate 75 is a big part of OSP's jurisdiction.
"What we're trying to do is save lives," said Patrol Sgt. John Chesser, a 16-year veteran of the force.
"Every stop that you make whether it's for stopping for speed or going too close, every reason you stop them you're looking for drug activity," Chesser continued.
Ohio is working with Indiana, Pennsylvania and West Virginia for the region-wide blitz, and directly with Michigan and Kentucky law enforcement to patrol I-75.
"Giving the message that in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, law enforcement is out. We're patrolling, we're monitoring the roadways for the laws," Chesser said.
He added that almost the entire OSP Dayton post worked an overtime shift this weekend, including canine patrols.
Chesser reported stopping 10 people during a four-hour shift on Saturday; four for seat belt violations, four for speed violations, and the rest for license violations.
"Every traffic stop is a potential drug carrier," Chesser said. "The weather starts to break and it gets warmer, they get that itch and they start to drive a little faster."
Dayton resident Harry Scott thought the enforcement was a good idea.
"Having people out there that will find that might be driving impaired with alcohol or any kind of substance, that's good," Scott said.
Ronnie Rusk agreed: "I think it's good, but at the same time they're not going to stop everything."
Nonetheless, Sgt. Chesser said the objective was to increase visibility of patrols, in an effort to increase driver self-awareness.
Blitz enforcement started at midnight Friday, February 21, and ended at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, February 23.
