Natural Gas Leaks Possible as Weather Warms

MIAMI VALLEY -- The frozen ground could begin to thaw this week and natural gas leaks are possible, just as water lines can break.

Vectren Energy Delivery reminds its customers how to detect and respond to a gas leak.

Water main breaks or other earth-shifting activities associated with thawing have the potential to impact our gas system, and some isolated issues may occur. We want to make sure customers are proactive and call us immediately should they detect a leak or experience a loss of gas service, said Rick Schach, Vectrens senior vice president of marketing and energy delivery. Well respond 24 hours a day, and there is absolutely no fee associated with this emergency service.

Vectren says pure natural gas has no smell. However, Vectren adds a distinct odorant to the gas, called mercaptan, that smells like rotten eggs or sulfur, whereby detecting a leak is easy. Beyond the smell, signs of an outdoor gas leak can include patches of dead grass or vegetation, blowing dirt, bubbling water or a hissing sound.

In the event a gas odor is detected outside of a home or business, residents are reminded of the following:
Leave the area of the gas leak immediately, as well as areas where the odor of gas is noticeable.
Do not attempt to start or move nearby powered equipment or vehicles.
Call Vectren at 800-227-1376 from somewhere other than the location of the gas leak.
Alert neighboring property owners of the potential leak.
Remain in a safe area until emergency personnel arrive and do not enter the nearby home/business or neighboring premises.

In the event a gas leak is detected inside of a home or business, residents are reminded of the following:
Leave the home or business of the gas leak immediately, as well as areas where the odor of gas is noticeable.
Do not use the phone or a cell phone while in the building. If you notice the leak while talking on the phone, do not hang up.
Do not turn any lights, appliances or any electrical sources on or off, do not light matches, do not open or close windows and do not start a vehicle if its parked in a garage thats attached to the home/business of the suspected leak, nor utilize an automatic garage door opener upon exiting. These activities listed above could trigger an ignition if gas has significantly accumulated.
Call Vectren at 800-227-1376 from somewhere other than the location of the gas leak.
Alert neighboring property owners of the potential leak.
Remain in a safe area until emergency personnel arrive and do not re-enter the premises.
