The Worst 9-1-1 Calls of 2013 in Montgomery County

MIAMISBURG -- There were more than a million phone calls made last year to 9-1-1 in Montgomery County. However, our investigations found almost half of the time, there was no life-or-death emergency to speak of.

Dispatcher: "911, what is your emergency?"
Caller: "I don't have an emergency, I'm just trying to find out who I call to find out the score of the Saturday basketball game."
Dispatcher: "OK, you're calling 911 for this?"
Caller: "I don't know who to call. I've called several places."

"When they don't know who to call they call 911. They know we are a 24-hour-a-day operation so they know somebody's going to answer the phone," said Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Capt. Matt Haines. "That's why most of these dispatchers have heard calls like this one."

Caller: "I bought a phone from the store and they don't want to give me a refund back for my phone."

"One time we had a lady call because she was upset her hair salon gave her the wrong hair," said dispatcher Becky Thompson. "I told her to call back on the non-emergency line."

The reason it's so important not to call 9-1-1 when you have a non-emergency is because there are only so many 9-1-1 phone lines. If you have a non-emergency it's important to memorize your non-emergency number as well.

The non-emergency number may be different, depending on where you live. For most people it's 225-HELP (937-225-4357), but you can confirm that in your phone book, or search for your local police department online.

That way the person needing CPR instructions doesn't have to wait for you to figure out your non-emergency.

Caller: "Yes. Can somebody pick me up for work?"
Dispatcher: "Ma'am this is a life or death emergency line."
Caller: "OK ... this is life and death."

"I think the caller was serious," said Haines. "She didn't have a way to work so she felt maybe the police could help her with that. Children, intoxicated people and then people who just don't know who to call are the biggest culprits and misuse of 911."

But there is a difference between an unfortunate situation and a life-and-death situation.

Caller: "Just keys locked in the car it's not a big emergency but..."
Dispatcher: "OK. So you got keys locked in. Is there an animal or child inside?"
Caller: "An animal? There's probably a lot of insects."

These callers can be punished anywhere from a simple warning, to a fine to spending jail time.

Dispatcher: "911, what's your emergency?"
Caller: "Yeah, is it hot in here or is it just you?"
Dispatcher: "Do you have an emergency?"
Caller: "Yeah, you're hot."
Dispatcher: "You need to stop calling 911."

9-1-1 Tips:
-Be prepared to give your location
-Land line phones give more info than mobile phones
-Don't give old phones to children. They can still call 9-1-1.
