Cars Will Talk, Keeping Us Safer If DOT Gets Its Way
DAYTON -- There are all kinds of hazards waiting at every turn when you drive, so imagine if your car told you when you were in danger and how to avoid it.
That technology is already here. It would allow our cars to actually communicate through a radio network.
"The speed of your vehicle, the direction it's headed in, whether you're hitting the brakes, whether you're steering, so the computer on board that vehicle can see the other vehicles around it and make a decision on whether or not to warn you," explains David Friedman, acting administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"It provides the pilot, the operator, the driver. It gives advance warning, with enough time to avoid an issue," explains Greg Winree, Assistant Secretary of Reaching and Technology with U.S. Department of Transportation.
On Monday, the U.S. DOT unveiled its push to mandate that all new vehicles have the ability to talk to one another. Vehicle to vehicle technology, or V2V, has undergone 10 years of research, and a massive trial run last year at the University of Michigan was a success.
Federal reps say it is time to save lives, since 30,000 people die each year in traffic crashes in America.
"We see being able to address 70-80 percent of those crashes, reduce severity or avoid them all together, and that's a leap this nation is ready to take," said Winree.
"It sounds like a forecast before you get there so it would be really helpful, yes," Bill Gerard remarked as he pumped some gas.
But Matt Watercutter, who travels a lot for work, is just a tad more skeptical. "Until every car has it, it's not going to be a benefit to everybody, you just have to pay attention to what you're doing out on the road."
And just how soon we could see this out on the road is perhaps just a few years away; but exactly when is still unclear.
