Two Killed in Clermont County When Car Ends Up in Creek
STONELICK TOWNSHIP, Ohio (Jeff Hirsh, WKRC) -- There is no word yet on charges that will be filed in a deadly accident that killed a 38-year-old woman and a four-year-old boy.
A car ended up on its top in a creek Thursday night off State Route-50 in Stonelick Township, about a mile east of Owensville. The car was coming down Route-50. There's a little curve but it's pretty much a straight away. But there's one thing you don't see on Route-50, skid marks. It's not like the driver realized at the last second, 'uh oh, I've got to do something!'
Police say the car crossed Route-50, ran through a guardrail, and ended up in a creek thirty feet down. Investigators say the driver, 18-year-old Darin Grubbs of Goshen, fell asleep at the wheel around 10:45 pm.
Stonelick Twp. Fire Department Chief, Matthew Rose, said, "Came through the driveway here and went straight out, and when it went straight out it flipped and came down on its back of the car and landed on its roof in the creek."
The 18-year-old driver was not seriously hurt, and was able to climb up the wet, slippery embankment to tell rescuers that two others were still in the car, including a four-year-old boy.
Rose continued, "We flipped the vehicle up and reached in at that time and grabbed the child and began CPR down there until we got the equipment to get the child up over the embankment." That child was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. The other passenger, 38-year-old Melissa Grubbs, was gone from the car. Members of the Urban Search and Rescue team were called. They dealt with difficult terrain, fast- moving, 8 foot deep water, and terrible footing.
Tom Lakamp, a member of the search and rescue team, said, "We walked past her the first time. There was no way we could have found her. She would have been in the water."
Melissa Grubbs' body was found around 7:45 am two miles down the creek from where the car went in. Troopers did not release the name of the four-year-old child or his relationship to the two other people in the car. They also haven't said whether there's a family connection between Melissa and Darin Grubbs.
