Neighbors Are Concerned About Aggressive Dogs in Dayton
DAYTON -- Just days after a brutal dog attack that killed a Dayton woman, the City's Mayor admits there's a vicious dog problem.
And the same day of that fatal attack, Dayton Police had to shoot and kill another dog.
There were 182 reported dog bites in the City of Dayton in 2013.
"We have a dog that's about to attack here," said a 911 caller.
That's just one of several panicked 9-1-1 calls to dispatchers about aggressive dogs in the City of Dayton.
"We do have an issue with dogs, I do get a complaint about once a week that we try to look into," said Mayor Nan Whaley, City of Dayton.
Mayor Whaley briefly addressed the concern at the State of the City address Wednesday morning.
"We'll be looking into if there is more that the city can do," said Whaley.
On Friday, Klonda Richey was violently attacked by two dogs that were owned by her neighbors, Andrew Nason and Julie Custer.
Neither are facing charges at this time.
On the same day of that fatal attack, neighbors on Hawker Street in the city's East side, were facing an aggressive dog.
"There's a guy that came out, he's got him cornered in the yard. He had me go on. But he, he come out, and he had me like, I was ready to kick him or something because he was coming at me," said a 911 caller.
Just moments later an officer arrived and had to shoot and kill the dog after it tried to attack her and two others.
Just last year, Dayton Police had to shoot and kill 22 dogs.
"It's not just one breed. It's all dogs. People aren't treating them right and making them vicious and wanting them to attack people," said Linda Gray.
A neighbor we spoke to off camera tells us the same dog walked onto their porch, and when his young son opened the door, it lunged at him.
"I feel like nobody's safe when you got big dogs running around," said Gray.
Neighbors say something needs to change.
"I think if there's more than two complaints on one dog at any one time that there should be something done," said Gray.
The Montgomery County Health Department tells me 176 dogs were quarantined last year because they bit someone. They also say the majority of the dogs were from the City of Dayton.
