UPDATE: Hospitals See Increase in Weather-Related Injuries
DAYTON -- We checked back in with local hospitals Tuesday to find out how many more cases of people slipping and falling on the ice they treated.
We checked in with Miami Valley Hospitals and they say it's the busiest they've been all winter.
Several people showed up Tuesday with broken bones and bruises, and at least three injuries involved head trauma.
Meanwhile Kettering Health Network treated 47 people for slips and falls just Tuesday as well.
DAYTON-- Treacherous roads and sidewalks have Miami Valley hospitals seeing an increase in the number of fall related injuries in 2014.
Even with the recent rain, snow and ice that have made sidewalks into potential fall zones hasn't completely melted. Kettering Health Network says the winter has been so bad, they treated 50 fall cases in one day in January.
"I've seen a lot of other people slip so I'm constantly aware of it," said Abe McCarty while walking near University of Dayton. He's one of the lucky few who hasn't fallen on snow and ice.
"If I'm starting to fall first thing's first... I'm looking real closely to see if I'm able to grab on to anything or anyone," he said. But it's McCarty's reaction if he did fall, that's putting more patients in the hospital with ankle and wrist fractures this winter.
"We're full today," said Dr. Paul Zych about his Sycamore Medical Center emergency room, "Seen some hip fractures, some shoulder dislocations, head injuries and so forth so pretty much the full spectrum."
At least one inch of snow has been on the ground for eighty percent of 2014.
Emergency Rooms have been busy with weather related injuries to the point doctors are treating patients as they walk through the door. '
"A lot of times we'll start care out in the waiting room before they're even brought back and will include ordering certain xrays, ice packs," said Dr. Zych, "I would anticipate later tonight we will be seeing more of these fresh injuries."
If you fall and see any major swelling or deformities, Zych says you should get to a hospital right away.
He adds if its only a minor injury, the best remedy for a fall on the ice, is more ice on any painful spots.
A change of shoes can also help avoid a hospital bill. Zych says to avoid wearing anything with a flat sole.
