What To Know When Buying a Used Car
MIAMI VALLEY -- Are you in the market for a car?
The latest data from an auto consulting company shows a big demand for pre-owned vehicles. But if you plan to buy used, there are some things you need to know.
Here's what to do before you drive that dream car off the lot.
"For the most part make sure the car is accident free and if not, it's a minor accident and that is listed on the window sticker," says Ted Reidy, general manager of Mercedes Benz of Centerville.
Some window stickers contain a Carfax report, and Jeremy Barnhill, the general manager of Airport Hyundai, says that kind of history report is vital.
Itll actually tell you if there was an accident, if it was in a flood, previous damage that was reported to insurance, tell how many owners and open recalls. Ask whenever buying a car, Barnhill says.
Barnhill also recommends a personal check. The tires should be in good shape, make sure the paint matches on all panels. Look for stains on the interior. And, know what type of warrant it has.
At Airport Hyundai, there's a lifetime guarantee if you buy a 2009 or newer model that's less than 80,000 miles.
Of course, then comes the test drive. Get in and make sure the vehicle is a good fit for you. Turn down the radio to concentrate on the driving experience and to hear how the engine runs.
And really try it out. Hit the gas and breaks. How does it handle in curves.
Check for visibility. Can you see comfortably out of the windows?
Finally, make sure the space is right. Will it hold what's in your life? Is the trunk and back seat big enough?
If you're still happy with the car, it's time to work out a deal.
Find out if its certified pre-owned warranty that comes with it," Reidy says. "Maybe you need some financing. Right now we have 1.99 percent in particular years and models. Theres a lot of deals ask about them.
Your dream car may have been owned by someone else but it's new to you and car experts say, financially, used is a good choice. Even cars that are a year old are 20 to 30 percent cheaper than new.
