As Temps Get Above Freezing More Pipes Will Burst
DAYTON -- The below zero temps have frozen a lot of pipes and as it starts to get above freezing we will see more and more of those pipes bursting.
"I just had to stop for a minute because my arms are getting tired. The water is still seeping up as it slowly dries," said Lerecia Turner who had to spend a couple hours Wednesday afternoon cleaning up her kitchen after a frozen pipe burst and spouted water everywhere.
"It was just spewing out," she said. "It broke because of the cold. They said because it was so frigid it's froze down in that line until it snapped."
"You're looking at thousands of dollars if there's water on the floor in the drywall. You could be looking at up to $15-$20,000 if it's really in the walls," said Crystal Fox from Wagner insurance.
She says they have taken more claims for busted pipes this winter than any other in her memory.
"The workers were extremely busy," said Fox. "It was taken three to five days to even get in a home to get the water extracted, so it's been a really hard for the customers because that's a long time to wait for someone to get their homes while being without water."
Fox says as we get above freezing this week, they expect to see even more claims so follow instructions no so you don't have to call your insurance company.
"During the minus temperatures they should have faucets running, dripping. That helps, having cabinet doors open," Fox said. "Afterwards if they have it and they know they're starting to get water damage shut the water off and immediately contact your agent."
Even though it's too late for Turner, she is just grateful her granddaughter caught the leak when she did.
"It could've been worse," said Turner. "If no one had been home I really don't think how bad it would get, because the rate it was coming out, it would've probably went into the living room dining room."
It's not just homes. The Dayton Grand Hotel also suffered a major leak Wednesday. The fire department tells us their sprinkler piping froze in an unoccupied area of the basement. The Fire Department shut off water flow and no one was hurt.
