Too Many Snow Days Starting to Affect Student Learning

SPRINGFIELD -- A snow day used to be a celebration,

"I used to be like 'Yaay.' But now I'm just like 'Oh crap, I'm further behind than I should be'," said Springfield High sophomore Max Dillon.

For he and many other students, the six calamity days are starting to take their toll.

"Not only calamity days but two hour delays," said Dillon. "Those affect the learning environment that we have here because throughout those days we don't have school we don't get any learning done and the teachers aren't as productive when we have two hour delays because there's not enough time in the schedule for them to plan something."

Take Max's chemistry class for example.

"I know we're going to run out of time," said Mrs. Lisa Cunningham, the Chemistry teacher.

She puts notes online before class so the precious class time is spent on just the lessons. She started doing this when snow days and delays put them behind.

"It throws all the lesson plans completely off because you're not guaranteed a certain amount of time a day to spend with the students," said Cunningham. "The other half is all the state testing that takes place in March. It really puts us off schedule to have the students prepared for those important test dates."

Tuesday was another two hour delay at Springfield high school. Normally students have about 50 minutes in class but Tuesday it was just 30.

"Labs just have not been happening because we haven't had the time to set up and tear down let alone complete the chemistry lab in the middle," said Cunningham.

"Everything is out of whack," said Max's mom Teresa Dillon. "The kids are going to bed at different times, getting up at different times. The other thing is sports and practice schedules. It's throwing everything off. Meetings have been canceled. We are just ready to get back to a normal schedule."

Max and his mom  knows a normal schedule is just what he'll need to learn everything he needs to know for his end of the year AP tests, which could give him college credit.

"If you don't get above the minimum then you won't get credit," said Max Dillon. "By not getting all the information we need we may not be able to get all the credit."\
