No More Calamity Days
SPRINGFIELD -- This season old Man Winter has led to several snow days and two-hour delays.
"Oh yeah, we've had a lot of them," said Springfield parent Bridget Kriegbaum.
ABC 22/FOX 45 called around to several school districts and right now most are sitting on four calamity days. Fairborn school district and Trotwood Madison High School have already used all five days allowed. Most schools already have built-in make up days on their calendar.
"If we use more than five we will make them up at the end of the school year," said Springfield Superintendent Dr. David Estrop.
But next year, the Department of Education will no longer look at the number of days missed, but the number of hours kids are in school.
Grades 7-12 will need 1,001 hours. Students in K-6 need 910 hours and students in half-day kindergarten must have 455 hours.
"I know the intent of the legislature was to give us more flexibility and we appreciate it but it also creates more complications that we will have to explore," said Estrop. "What are the impacts of making up days or hours for transportation? For after school activities? What about parents' daycare arrangements? Is it going to inconvenience them?"
Estrop says his students won't stop at the minimum hours needed from the state.
"The taxpayers pay for us to have a certain amount of school. We should have them. Plain and simple," said Estrop. "I don't care whether we make up days or we make up minutes. Our children need all the instruction they can get in more right now the U.S. has one of the shortest instructional years in the world and it shows."
