Water Main Breaks Affecting Local Businesses
MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- The Miami Valley is enjoying a warm up, but as things thaw out, water mains are now bursting.
The rollercoaster ride of temperatures has crews from the Montgomery County Water Services busy, but those water main breaks are affecting some local.
"We were very concerned that we weren't going to be open," said Jami Smith, co-ower of Junebug's Cupcakes.
Water was flowing onto 725 across from the Dayton Mall early Friday morning, but wasn't inside Junebug's Cupcakes.
"We didn't know how long we were going to be out we weren't sure if we were going to be able to open by 10," said Smith.
County crews had to shut off water to 36 homes and businesses, while they repaired a hole in a 6-inch fire line that runs to the hydrant.
"Our infrastructure is aging the pipe and the system in this area is about 50 years old so it's reaching it's end of it's usable life it probably has another 10 years or so in it," said Brianna Wooten, Montgomery County Environment Services.
The aging system is problem all over Montgomery County, and water main breaks are common.
From december until now, the county has fixed 180 breaks, during the same time last year, they fixed 160.
"This is pretty average, which is hard to believe considering how extreme the temperatures have been," said Wooten.
And you can expect more as the temperatures go up this weekend.
County crews are working around the clock to fix any, and all breaks.
"It's very difficult to predict when main breaks are going to happen even a newer pipe can break so while aging infrastructure is an issue, you really can't predict where mains are going to break more frequently or not," said Wooten.
Unfortunately, Stafford's Jewelers suffered two breaks near their store in just over a month.
This morning's break, was the largest and affected the most people.
"Thursday, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are our biggest business days so we were concerned, so we were very grateful when they came in and said that we could open," said Smith.
A sweet sigh of relief for Junebug, and her cupcakes.
The businesses are on a boil advisory until Saturday morning.
If you see a water main break in your neighborhood, you can alert crews by calling (937) 781-2678.
