Cities Coping With Salt Shortage

VANDALIA -- More snow is expected to make its way through the Miami Valley in the next couple of days and with so many cities facing a salt supply shortage, we wanted to know how area cities are coping.

The City of Vandalia is one of the lucky ones.

After getting down to just 100 tons of salt, they received a 150-ton supply just Thursday afternoon.

"So we've gone through a pretty good amount of salt," said Rich Hopkins, Communications Manager for the City of Vandalia.

The City of Vandalia dealing with the same hard truth as other cities in the Miami Valley.

"There's still 350 tons on back order right now and we're hopeful that will come sometime soon," Hopkins said.

The city only had 100 tons of salt left in their barn, before they got a 150-ton shipment Thursday.

"While we're not going to be willy nilly throwing salt everywhere, we do feel a little more comfortable that we're going to be able to make it through the weekend and through this next major snow event that we think is coming maybe Monday or Tuesday," said Hopkins.

Trotwood also partially replenished its supply, although it was only 250 tons of the 750 tons they ordered, and they had to go to West Virginia to get it.

We asked drivers if the short supply is worrisome.

Larry Shepard said the short supply doesn't concern him much.

"I've been driving in this kind of weather for a long time, it happens every year," Shepard said.

Unlike Trotwood and Vandalia, Fairborn is down to just 200 tons of salt, and they normally keep 800 tons on hand at all times.

Their shipment hasn't made it in and they don't know when it will.

We contacted their supplier, Cargill, and was told there's been an unprecedented demand for salt and they're working around the clock to supply as much as they can.

Dayton and Montgomery County are also low on salt.

Their supplier, North American Salt, says they just can't keep up with the demand.

So we asked, should people in the community be concerned?

"We're never going to be in a situation where we have no salt, we're going to preserve what we have, we're gonna make that last and we're gonna focus on those critical areas so it should never be an issue where the roads are unsafe," said Hopkins.

All the cities we spoke with say their main roads and intersection will be taken care of.

However, neighborhood streets might just be plowed and not salted.
