Montgomery County Forced to Borrow Salt From Neighboring Communities
DAYTON -- With the threat of snow Friday night and into Saturday drivers are concerned about the road salt supply shortage.
Montgomery County was down to just 15-hundred tons, and had to borrow salt from neighboring communities.
"We've been trying to get salt where ever we can," said Paul Gruner, Montgomery County Engineer, "We borrowed a couple hundred tons from Miami County."
Montgomery County Engineer Paul Gruner is thankful for this 200-ton truckload of road salt.
"That all helps a little bit as we, we have a another couple of storms this weekend," said Gruner,
While the county now has several hundred tons of salt inside the salt barn, it's usually filled to the top.
"That's pretty low for us we start the year with about 10 or 11,000 tons," said Gruner.
The county was down to just 15-hundred tons of salt, it takes 100-tons to treat the county roads, just once.
"It makes me wonder about streets not being safe to drive on," said Kurt Lundy.
The county is also borrowing salt from the City of Riverside, and is expected to get a shipment of 120-tons from their supplier sometime today.
But with the impending snow, is it enough?
"Will that get you guys through the weekend?" asked the reporter, "Hopefully, we're doing things to stretch it out so we'll get through the weekend," said Gruner.
They are conserving as much of this salt as they can, making major roads and intersections a priority, while side streets might have to wait.
"It's scary out there sometimes , just hitting some bumps and losing control and then you're off the road," said Kurt Lundy.
Crews won't be out pre-treating for the snow.
Instead, they'll use the brine after they've plowed the roads to save the salt they have.
Even though they're conserving drivers are still worried.
"We still got the rest of the month to go and then February, yeah that is something to be concerned about, "said Lundy.
We called the salt suppliers for Montgomery and Miami County, North American Salt, and found out the reason Miami County is able to get their shipments is that they get their supply from Toledo which is still able to meet demand.
While Montgomery County gets their salt from Cincinnati, where supplies are very low.
