Potholes Will Pose Driving Problems Until Spring
DAYTON -- Fixing damage to roads in the Miami Valley has taken a back seat to the snow plows and salt trucks. And it seems like drivers can't hop on the highway without dipping into a pothole.
"It's very rough on the car," driver Angela Puterbaugh said.
"With more freezing temperatures and temperatures below zero this year, and when we experience the freeze and thaw, that's when we experience more potholes," said Bob Lenser, an Ohio Department of Transportation Administrator for Montgomery County.
But lately, there's been more to worry about than patching potholes.
"When everyone's out in the snow plows we can't take care of the potholes at the same time," Lenser said.
Lenser says ODOT has more than doubled the amount of patching this year, compared to last.
"In a normal year we might use about 5,000 pounds. We've used about 1,200 pounds of the cold mix to try to address the potholes as they pop up now," said Lenser.
The cold mix is just temporary, so it doesn't quite get the job done. So why are they using it?
"Right now the asphalt plants are closed," said Lenser. "As the weather allows the plants will open and we will make the repairs."
The quick fix won't last all winter, so will drivers be dealing with the effects of these winter storms later?
Lenser says, "This winter has had an impact on what we will do in the spring. The same people that are operating our snow plows, they're the same people that will be working on fixing the potholes."
In Greene County, ODOT's spokesperson says they will be working on a three-season, 5.5-mile repair to I-675, one of the most pothole-ridden areas.
Work will begin when weather permits.
