Non-Profit Turns Drug House into Safe House

DAYTON -- For the first time in Ohio, a property once used as a drug house is being transformed into a safe house for women.

Dayton's nonprofit Oasis House will use the home as a sanctuary for survivors of prostitution and sex trafficking.

"All of these women have had some sort of pain or have been led down this path by abuse trafficking at a very early age that brings them to this place. It is reality right here in the middle of Dayton," Oasis House Director Cheryl Oliver said Wednesday.

Oliver says 98 percent of the women Oasis House works with became victims as children. The Oasis House works to turn victims into survivors.

Sexual assault, rape, trading for drugs and money and things like that among their families," Oliver explained. "Unless they have a safe place to live and a roof over their heads and food in their stomach there's a slim chance they'll escape the lifestyle completely."

The three-bedroom home was broken into earlier this month. Thieves stole the furnace, air conditioning and all appliances. But the setback brought out the generosity in some local heroes.

"Police officers are going to help pay for the furnace and air conditioning and the installation out of their own pocket," Oliver added proudly.

In fact, all of the furnishings, groceries, down to the personal hygiene items will be donated by various charitable groups and private citizens.

Oliver says the donations, the home, and the continuous work her organization does is to move survivors away from their past and into a better future.

"These are real women, real human beings who are deserving of a better life than the one that they have," Oliver said Wednesday.

The women selected to live in the home will have to be drug-free and in school or working. They hope to have the operation up and running by end of March.
