Rain to Turn into Ice Overnight; Drivers Urged to use Caution
DAYTON -- A lot of the Miami Valley saw just over a half-inch of rain from Sunday's storm that pushed its way through.
The rain has prevented any type of pre-treatment on our roadways.
Dayton City crews tell us they will be called in at 10 p.m. to hit the roads for any freezing on the roads and snow removal.
Montgomery County crews tells us they are all on standby Sunday night into Monday morning.
The problem on the roads will be from the rain, melted snow and freezing temperatures, which will lead to black ice.
Come Monday morning we will see freezing temperatures.
Here's a look below at what we can expect:
A WIND CHILL WARNING is also now in effect for the entire area from 4 a.m. Monday until 5 p.m. Tuesday. Temperatures will drop to below zero on Monday, then fall to 10-20 below zero Monday night. Temps Tuesday will be around -10 to 0. Winds chills during this time will be near 5-15 below zero Monday morning then falling to near 30-40 below zero Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon.
A few things have happened in the past 12 hours that have dramatically changed our outlook for snow in some areas. The center of low pressure is a bit stronger than some of the models have indicated. When this happens, its able to pull in a LOT more warm air in front of it. This is why we are seeing rain in some places now. However, the worst of the storm and the bulk of the precipitation will be moving through late this afternoon into the evening. As that heavy precipitation moves in we'll see a change to snow.
So what does this mean for snow totals? Areas in the northwestern corner, like Mercer County, will still see the higher end of the snow totals, likely around 6-10". This includes most of Mercer County and areas just near there. There will be a fast drop off in totals as you head south across the viewing area. Places like Sidney and Piqua will see a range of 3-6", while Dayton will likely only see around 1-3". Our southern counties, like Warren and Clinton counties will see mostly rain and only around an inch or so.
Cold air will be moving in behind this system. Expect highs near 0 Monday and Tuesday. The coldest temperatures will be seen Monday night into Tuesday morning. Lows will be near -15 with wind chills around -30 to -40. Be prepared for the cold air. Make sure your gas tank is full to prevent freezing. Turn your heat up a bit. Also to prevent your pipes from freezing, leave cabinet doors open around all pipes and leave all faucets and showers on just a little bit.
