What To Do To Your Car Before Winter Weather Hits
FAIRBORN -- While today your car most likely was able to start right up, in a few days when the temperatures drop into the teens, you'll need to take some time to warm it up. But there's a few other concerns that can come this week.
"It's been leaking for three or four days so I put a gallon of antifreeze and it was leaking out so I took it back to the garage," said driver Darrell Brewer.
Technician Phillip Reynolds says the biggest reason more customers will see him in the coming weeks is an antifreeze or coolant leak.
The second biggest reason is dying battery.
"Everything is colder so even your oil is thicker so it takes more time to turn a car on so if you have a weak battery will make it not start," he said.
"I did make sure I have good tires," said driver Roni Hairston. "I had good tires put on a month ago."
That's a good idea. Tires may be the next biggest problem you face this winter. In fact, for every 10 degree drop, your tire pressure drops one measure.
"If you have aluminum rims on your car aluminum rims seem to leak a lot more than metal rims do because of the temperature change," said Reynolds.
And don't forget about your windshield. Remember hitting it to crack the ice is never a good idea, nor is pouring water on it. but if you already have a crack, you'll want to get that fixed.
"If it's already had a crack in it could make it bigger. The weather wouldn't crack it itself," said Reynolds.
