School Bus Crash Has Parents Asking for Seat Belts
BEAVERCREEK -- Parents are renewing calls for seat belts on school buses after a school bus crash that sent five kids to the hospital.
"It really sounded almost like a cannon boom," said Betsey Moritzsarlay, who witnessed the crash. "It was quite loud and it was quite startling."
It's a scene no parent ever wants to see.
"There was six or seven ambulances," said Moritzsarlay.
"As soon I heard the sirens I knew my child wasn't home, I knew the roads were slick, I instantly started driving around. I saw some emergency vehicles and I found her," said Erica Stewart, the mother of a child on the bus.
"Well, we were just driving, it was like all of a sudden it was like bang and we all went forward," said Sophia Stewart, who was on the bus.
The Beavercreek school bus had just started its route to drop off dozens of kids from Ankeney Middle School, when it was hit by a Silver Toyota.
The driver of the car was taken to the hospital and so were five kids, who were sitting near where the car hit the bus.
"She like, hit her head on the chair, I'm like, oh my goodness," said Sophia.
Sophia wasn't hurt, and the kids taken to the hospital suffered minor injuries.
But this crash has parents thinking about what else can be done to keep their kids safe.
"I would love to see seat belts on buses," said Erica. "I think that would make me feel safer as a parent."
Back in February, in Logan County, a bus slid on the ice and landed in a ditch on its side.
Forty kids were taken to the hospital.
The bus driver later resigned.
Parents say these images should be an example of why seat belts should be added to school buses.
"Even though they're large, children do still get hurt on them," said Erica.
Just this year, the federal government required seat belts on long distance buses, but not on school or city buses.
