FDA Delays Trans Fat Ban
DAYTON -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is giving companies more time to eliminate trans fats from their processed foods.
The FDA said today it's extending the public comment period on its determination that trans fats are not safe for use in food.
Trans fat is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and heart attacks. Hundreds of foods are made with it, and the F.D.A. says reformulating them will take more time. Small businesses have expressed concern about the cost and the challenges of removing trans fats. Everything from microwave popcorn to margarine, and even frosting is made with trans fats.
Kettering Weight Loss Dietician Marta Wright says they're a major contributor to America's obesity epidemic. She says, "somebody needs to take control of health. Foods are convenient now, and I think convenient foods also need to be healthy foods."
Wright says trans fats can be replaced with healthier oils, and some fast food restaurants like McDonald's have already taken that step.
Eliminating trans fats from most foods won't guarantee healthier menus, but the Centers for Disease Control believes reducing them in the food supply could prevent 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year.
WASHINGTON -- The Food and Drug Administration has decided today to delay for 60 days the decision to ban trans fat.
The FDA says it wants to give people more time to comment about the decision. The ban now would take effect March 8.
