Why Many Districts Didn't Have Delays
CENTERVILLE -- A lot of people were caught off guard by the amount of snow that fell on the roads Monday morning -- including street crews and school districts.
A lot of the big districts in the area like Miamisburg, Dayton, Kettering, Trotwood and Centerville opted out of a two-hour delay.
Parents like Carla Hohenbrink of Centerville were left asking why.
"The two-hour delay really got me because many seemed to be delayed," she said.
We went to Centerville Superintendent Tom Henderson to see what the protocol is on days like this.
"I was up at 4 and checked the roads at that time and what was being forecast, it was going to be a light dusting," Henderson said.
Henderson says he is one of three people in the district who monitors the roads to make a decision. On a day like Monday, timing is everything to make decisions about closings or delays.
"The first bus rolls out at about 6 a.m., so we have to make decisions by 5:15, 5:30," he said.
Henderson tells us at that time, the snowfall was still light, so he made the decision to go without any delay.
But, conditions changed after their deadline of making a decision.
"It just kept snowing so at that time, we were pretty much already committed," he said.
Centerville's Public Works Department personnel were also caught off guard by Monday's accumulation, but they say they were loaded up and ready to go just in case.
They had crews out on the road by 3 a.m.
For street crews, it's hard for them to clear residential roads before the buses headed out.
"The way our roads are set up, we have to deal with the primary roads first," said Centerville Street Supervisor, Marty Tackett.
