UPDATE: Bus Driver Accused of OVI Resigns

SPRINGBORO -- Sherry Callahan, the 52-year-old teacher accused of driving a school bus while under the influence of alcohol on Wednesday morning, has submitted a letter of resignation.

School officials say they received the letter before her disciplinary meeting was scheduled to begin Thursday.

Springboro School Bus Driver Accused Of OVI

SPRINGBORO -- A Springboro school bus carrying special needs children gets pulled over. And the driver is accused of being drunk. Sherry Callahan, 52, of Franklin, was arrested for OVI and child endangering this morning in the middle of her route.

Callahan was first spotted swerving near East Central and South Main St. around 6:45 Wednesday morning.

Springboro police say the bus driver was in charge of special needs kids and almost ran a car off the road. When officers pulled her over, there were three children on the bus.

"I just had a school bus run me off the road. I'm pretty sure the bus driver is either intoxicated or has got something wrong with her," a caller told 911 dispatchers.

"The bus went to turn left into one of those neighborhoods and then ran us up on the median. They just about run us over. I mean, it was ridiculous."

Officers tracked down Callahan still driving the special needs bus down West Mill Street with three kids on board. Springboro father, Mike, has a seventh grade son who was on the bus.

"The bus came as scheduled, he got right on the bus, sat down, the bus driver waved to us, she waved back and she was off," he said.

But Mike and his wife later got a phone call from the Springboro Superintendent telling them Callahan had been arrested for driving drunk. Their son witnessed the entire thing.

"He said that they got pulled over and the police came and made her walk a tight rope, is what he said. And then they took off her shoes and shined a flashlight at her feet and face. And then he said there was a lot of yelling after that."

Police say no one was injured. The students were taken to the junior high and high school by a district administrator.

"This is probably the best possible outcome that everybody is safe and we won't have to worry about anything anymore with this particular driver," Mike said.

Springboro schools suspended Callahan and will hold a hearing Thursday to determine if she still has a job. We tried contacting Callahan for comment, but she wasn't able to be reached. The district says she's been working with them for 20 years with no incidents until now

Earlier coverage:

SPRINGBORO -- A school bus driver has been placed on suspension after a witness claims to have seen a bus driving erratically Wednesday morning through East Central Avenue and South Main Street in Springboro.

Police responded and performed sobriety tests on the driver, identified as Sherry Callahan, 52, of Franklin. Tests confirmed Callahan had been driving under the influence of alcohol, police say.

No one wanted to talk to us when we knocked on her Franklin address, but when we told Springboro parents what she is accused of, they had a lot to say.

"When you put them on the bus you think they're going to get to school safely," said Donna Mayforth. "It would scare me to death to think that my child wasn't safe."

Callahan was arrested and transferred to the Ohio State Highway Patrol post in Lebanon for additional tests. She then was transferred to the Springboro Police Department for processing. She is now scheduled for an appearance before Magistrate Jeff Kirby at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 30.

Superintendent Todd Petrey says student safety is paramount.

"I want to assure our community that we take this morning's event very seriously and will do all we can to assure the safety of our students each and every day, Petrey said.

"The driver of the bus will not drive a Springboro bus during the course of a thorough, ongoing investigation," the district's statement read. "Once the investigation is complete, the district will take administrative action."

When police pulled the bus over, Callahan was still early in her route. In fact there were only three students on the bus. Springboro's transportation department brought another bus and another driver to transport those three students to school.

"All the students arrived safely and on time," said business manager John Pennell.

He says this is an isolated incident and that Callahan has had clean record as a driver with them for more than 20 years.

"Surprised. Disappointed," he said.

Maybe even more surprising and more disappointing,"I've been a business manager for almost 16 years and unfortunately yes I've dealt with this and other school districts it something that crops up unfortunately every once in a while."

Since she has a commercial drivers license, she could face more serious charges.

Callahan is one of 60 bus drivers the district employs. She will have a hearing Thursday to learn whether or not she still has a job. Follow @wale2245 on twitter for updates.
