Kids Find Forever Family
DAYTON -- A 15-year-old Florida boy became a YouTube sensation earlier this year when he stood in church and pleaded for parents to adopt him. Thousands of American children are just like him, in need of a family. But a woman in Dayton saved three of them by giving them a forever family just in time for Christmas.
It's been an extra special holiday season this year for Charlotte Moore and her three young sons.
"This is making me feel a little younger. I'm raising kids again," Moore said.
The 61-year-old mother of five grown daughters adopted Qwaylin, J'siah, and Jason in November. What do they bring to her home? "Joy, and I mean a lot of it! This little guy will keep you laughing." She points to Jason, who came to her home as her foster son when he was just a few days old. She says, "I was going to take him home for a couple of days, and he's been here two years now."
She's the only mother he's ever known. Big brothers Quaylin and J'siah moved in a few months later.
"I asked them, would it be alright for me to be their mom, and they said 'yes,'" Moore says. "I went to my pastor, and he said 'Charlotte, if you feel that in your heart, then go for it'." The adoption was finalized in November in Montgomery County court.
Probate Judge Alice McCollum says a lot of the people become foster parents, and then they don't want the children to leave. They fall in love. She points out there are plenty of children in this country for parents to adopt, and they don't have to leave the U.S.
The Adopt America Network says right now 130,000 children are in foster care, waiting for their forever families. Adoption case worker Tyra Shellbarger says, what it means is that children have love, that they have someone to call Mommy, have someone to hold them, to be there when they're sick.
That's just the kind of mom Charlotte's daughter Christina remembers. About her new brothers, she says, "They sort of can't do any wrong, and we were always in trouble." She laughs and continues, "But they got a good mom. They got a really good mom."
Moore says, "We hug each other good morning, how are you?" Happy to have a full house again, you can see that she is proud of her boys. I believe they're going to be good and intelligent kids because they make good grades."
And this Christmas season, there's just one lesson she hopes they learn: "It's not about these gifts. It's about love and trying to do the right thing." Her small home is filled by these little boys and all of their energy. As they decorate their Christmas tree, she says, "You know, I didn't think I would be this happy, but I am, and they are too."
