2 Infants Die from Unsafe Sleep Practices
DAYTON-- A Dayton family is grieving the death of their infant son after he died just days before Christmas.
On Friday, the one month old suffocated to death, while sleeping on a couch.
Earlier this month, another Dayton infant, just 6 weeks old, was found dead in his crib. Detectives said he suffocated on a soft pillow that was left in his crib. Both deaths have been ruled accidental.
"In Montgomery County alone, a baby dies every 6 weeks from unsafe sleep practices." Jessica Saunders, injury prevention coordinator at Dayton Children's Hospital said.
"That may be where a mother rolls on a baby because they are sharing a bed, or it might be a baby dies sleeping on a couch, or it might be a baby suffocates because there is too much stuff in his or her crib." She said.
Saunders tells new parents they should practice the ABC'S of safe sleeping, where a baby should should sleep:
Alone, on their Back, and in a Crib.
"No pillows, no blankets, no stuffed animals, nothing else in the crib. They don't need anything else."
She said to keep your baby warm, use a sleep sack instead of a blanket.
As tempting as it might be, infants should never sleep in your bed.
"Unfortunately we see parents that roll on their children because they are exhausted in those first few months of life."
A safer option is a having your child sleep in a bassinet or pack and play next to your bed.
