Centerville Student Arrested After Making Threat on Twitter

CENTERVILLE -- A Centerville student is locked up Wednesday after police say he threatened to shoot up his high school.

Police say several students were making fun of the 16 year old suspect on Twitter. In retaliation, he tweeted back, threatening to bring a rifle to school and kill the bullies. He's charged with making false alarms, a misdemeanor. He was originally in even bigger trouble, facing a felony charge after police say he made terroristic threats, using less than 140 characters.

"When there's a threat or something, that does have to be investigated because there's always a possibility that they really mean what they say," said Centerville grandmother, Pam Cash.

Classmates saw the threats on the teen's twitter feed and reported him to the school resource officer.

"I think people are probably giving out their true opinion that they're not gusty enough to say in person, so I think things get said through social media," said Centerville mom, Dawn Chandler.

Detectives investigated and learned the suspect had no access to a gun and wasn't planning on following through with the threat, but he was still arrested, causing some to question whether police went too far.

"All it is, is something that's out there, somebody said something, and I don't know if it's all fiction," said Centerville grandfather, John Cash.

"History shows you need to take that seriously," Chandler said.

And police agree. Just look at Columbine or the Sandy Hook tragedy. Nowadays, they have to take any threat, even if they're tweets, seriously.

The 16 year old will remain in juvenile detention until his hearing on November 15th.

CENTERVILLE --  A Centerville High School student has been arrested because of a threat he made on Twitter.

Centerville police say the 16-year-old was teased by other students about something he posted on the social media site.

As a response, he wrote "getting a gun and shooting up everybody at the school."

Officers say the teen had no real means to carry out the threat.  They  couldn't take any chances and arrested him.
