Dangerous Pollutants From School Buses Are Harmful to Kids
HUBER HEIGHTS -- A new study shows kids walk through some of the dirtiest air while walking to and from their bus and to their parent's cars.
It's because of the buses and cars idling while they wait for the kids to get on board.
Doctors say breathing in the fumes from the tailpipes is hazardous to their health.
"Started out with colds, getting colds quite often and then they contributed that to asthma," said Darius Kee, concerned parent.
After hearing his son is breathing in a dangerous pollutant every day at school, his worry for his son grows.
"Well I'm extremely concerned, if buses are idling and my son is inhaling the carbon monoxide then that's that's not good," said Kee.
"They leave the engines idling so they are spewing out these fine particulate and sulfur dioxide," said Doctor Robert Fink, Director of Pulmonary Medicine at Dayton Children's Hospital, "And young children as they get on and off the buses are heavily exposed to these fumes."
Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency started a "No Idling Campaign" for schools across the nation.
"The more you breath these particles in, at least as a child, the greater your risk of developing asthma," said Doctor Fink.
Doctor Fink knows all too well the invisible danger to your children.
"They're more likely to trigger an asthma attack," said Doctor Fink, "They're more likely to have difficulty with gym class and exercise."
Huber Heights City Schools already require bus drivers to turn off their engines while they wait.
The district was also awarded a grant to attach a convertor that reduced the amount of pollution coming out of the tailpipe.
Something that makes parents happy.
"I think any time you're dealing with kids, if it's going to save kids," said Kee, "And it's going to prevent a potential asthma attack, then yeah, I would be all for it."
According to the EPA's web site, turning the bus engine off and then on again doesn't harm it.
In fact, it says leaving the bus idling for several minutes causes more damage than turning it off.
