Why Are So Many Toddlers Using Mobile Devices?

DAYTON -- You may have seen some of these super smart kids online. Well, they're also in the Miami Valley.

One year old Naomi can barely talk, but on a mobile device, "she knows to get the song she likes and turn it on," said mom Nicole Warner.

Same with 2-year-old Margaret.

"She like picks up my iPhone and just starts playing music on there and I don't even know how to do that," said mom Caroline Davis.

According to a Common Sense Media study, in 2013, 38 percent of American kids under 2 have used a mobile device for playing games, watching videos or something related. That's almost quadruple from the 10% who did so in 2011.

The kids at My Father's House Childcare are so used to it, at one point they thought the news crew's camera was a mobile device.

"Almost all the children who come in here know how to do something with their parent's phone," said Warner.

Kids are active learners so if you just give them your iPad and tell them to figure it out, they may be able to do that, but if you really want your kids to get something out of it, you'll have to sit with them and work together.

"It can't be a substitute babysitter, it has to be more than hands-on, it has to be minds on," said Shauna Adams, executive director for the Center of Early Learning Initiative at the University of Dayton. "What is a benefit for the child is making them think and is it strengthening our relationship?"

Still, organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no television and entertainment media for kids under 2 because it can delay their language development.

But parents say they've seen the impact.

"She was playing that number game and then she started counting things all over the place. I think that helped a lot," said Davis.
