Local Leaders Nudging Feds, Want Help With GM Plant Tenants

MORAINE -- It's the poster child - so to speak - for the automobile industry. And for five years, Dayton-area leaders have been trying to bring life back to the former General Motors assembly plant in Moraine.

"It's been long and hard, and we've struggled," said Tammy Brackney, who explains that five years ago, she would have a full bar at the Upper Deck. It is just a stones throw from the plant.

"I just pray that's something's going to go in across the street," said Brackney with a glimmer of hope in her eyes.

"We certainly appreciate the coordinated effort that has gone into play to make sure this building stays here, stands here, and is also then an opportunity for job creation," said Congressman Mike Turner who stood alongside local leaders. They stood and touted that they saved the massive GM complex from being scrapped.

"The city was adamant that that not be what happens because we would have had a big vacant site... We (are) gonna be able to keep this building up, bring jobs and job revitalization and job creation back to the city," said Mayor Elaine Allison.

That phrase "job creation" was used more than a dozen times  at Monday afternoon's press conference, because that's what city leaders say they work at everyday. Five tenants occupy a small portion of the vast space, and Turner's asking the Department of Commerce for more assistance - so they can offer incentives for companies to come here.

"In this instance, reminding the Department of Commerce they helped save this building, I think, gives them an additional incentive to bring resources," Turner said.

The biggest lead so far is a confidential project called "Project Southbound." Leaders say if it goes through, it's estimated to bring hundreds of jobs back to this area, and it's supposed to make up more than a million square feet of space. No word on it's total economic impact.

"I think we're all very encouraged, it takes the community working together to pull any big project off," said Mayor Allison.

Back at the Upper Deck, Tammy says she's holding on to hope... it is all they have had for five years now.

"I'm just praying something happens cause that would really really help us and everyone around here."
