Limited Crosswalks Along State Route 725 Make for a Deadly Walk
MIAMISBURG -- It's a stretch of road everyone recognizes, and uses often.
Five pedestrian involved accidents in just three years on state route 725 near the Dayton Mall.
One proved deadly, killing a local man and his beloved dog.
"No farewell words were spoken, no time to say goodbye," said Kandi Sumpter, William Kish's aunt.
A family coping...
"You were gone before we knew it and only god knows why," said Sumpter.
With the loss of their loved one, nine months after his tragic and senseless death
"I just miss him so much I can hardly stand it some days," said Cindy Payne, William's mother.
William Kish and his furry friend, Rocc, were hit and killed while crossing State Route 725 on a dark February night.
Troopers say he wasn't in a crosswalk.
"How is he to be in a crosswalk when there is no crosswalks, none," said Payne, "And how can they blame my son for someone else hitting him."
The area is a confusing place not only for pedestrians, but for those in charge of the area.
The intersection of Prestige Place and State Route 725 is Miamisburg's responsibility, while the State Route 725 and Springboro Pike intersection belongs to ODOT.
"Just look out there and most likely you'll see someone standing there, just standing in the median, there's someone there's somebody crossing right now," said Mark Bromer, owner of Disc Exchange on State Route 725.
While talking to Bromer, a woman was standing in the median, waiting to cross the heavily traveled route.
"I'm just judging by the lights and when you don't see no cars," said a man who wanted to remain anonymous, "So it's sort of a game of Russian Roulette? Russian Roulette, yeah, take your chances."
Moments before the man spoke to us, he crossed the five lanes to get to his bus stop.
"I think it's very dangerous walking across there without a crosswalk," he said, "I think there should be one."
After watching person after person run across five lanes of moving traffic, we wanted to know who's responsible for this intersection, Mall Woods and Prestige Place at 725.
After some digging, we found out the City of Miamisburg is now conducting a study to see if a crosswalk can be put in, but only if it doesn't disrupt the flow of traffic.
"Both the pedestrian safety and the traffic safety are important, we need to understand is there a delicate balance between those two," said bob stanley, city of Miamisburg engineer.
While Miamisburg does their research, we wanted to know if ODOT was doing theirs.
"We don't have any crosswalks currently planned," said Mandi Dillon, ODOT District 7 spokesperson.
No plans, no crosswalks, even after this stretch of road claimed a life. So what's their reason?
"This is a section that has a lot of heavy traffic as far as vehicles go, so it's sort of like where you just don't want a lot of people walking along the road in that area," said Dillon.
But it's happening.
In fact, as we questioned ODOT, a man walks across the road, and stood right in the median.
"Would you say that that's safe though?" asked the reporter, "No, I don't think that that's safe," said Dillon.
A safety problem that Cindy and her family hope to solve.
"I'm ready to fight and stand up for my son now, I'm ready to go forward and do whatever I have to do to get those crosswalks put in there," said Payne.
Cindy and her family are currently working on a petition to take to the state to get crosswalks put in along State Route 725.
She's hoping they will be named in her son's honor.
