Snow On Way; Drivers Young, Old Gearing Up
DAYTON -- The first real snow of the season is headed our way. Meteorologists at ABC 22/FOX 45 say most people will see about an inch, but since the ground is so warm, it will not accumulate.
The first real showers should move in around 8:00 Monday night, and it will turn to snow sometime around 10.
For drivers, the first round of winter weather can be tricky so imagine learning how to drive in this weather.
"At first I was scared but now I'm more relaxed. And it's not hard as I drive on the highway a lot and I've driven on country roads," said Meaghan Saettel, who gets behind the wheel as much as she can.
"I'm just excited to be on my own and drive. I just can't wait until I don't have to drive with my mom anymore," said the Miamisburg teen, giggling.
On Tuesday morning, she will be getting some winter weather practice.
"I'm a little nervous, but I think I'll do okay," she said.
Her mother is actually glad she is learning now.
"It's good they need to be able to know how to do that," said Karen Saettel.
I got behind the wheel with one of Meaghan's instructors, Jeff Caldwell. He is the owner of PDS, or Professional Driving Services. While the pro refreshed my driving skills, we talked winter driving safety.
"Even if you want to go out there and just stand on it. Is it a little bit slippery, is it just wet and change your driving according to that," said Caldwell.
Then there's the basics.
"You've got to think farther down the road, leave more space. Be smoother in everything that you do, whether it's breaking or accelerating, turning the wheel, you have to be smoother because you know the traction isn't going to be there," said Caldwell, who also cautioned drivers to watch intersections. Even if folks have a red light, it doesn't mean they are paying attention, and in snowy weather, it is much harder to stop.
"You definitely have to watch your speed because if you go too fast you can go out of control," said Meaghan who's listened well.
