The Lasting Perks of Online Dating
DAYTON -- One in three Americans now meet their spouses online, new research shows those marriages are less likely to end in divorce. A University of Chicago study found in the last seven years nearly eight percent of marriages initiated offline ended in breakups. Couples married after meeting online only reported a six percent breakup rate. They also reported greater marital satisfaction.
Kathleen Zinnecker's online dating profile sounded a bit like a movie -- anyone interested must love dogs. She says, "you're professional, you're working during the day. You don't want to go out to the bars to find somebody."
But Troy Nelson was not so quick to believe that online dating was for him. I was the eternal skeptic, says Troy, but theyre about to embark on marriage number two. They agree its all about compatibility and chemistry.
Linda Poynter was single for 30 years before meeting her husband Vince. She says it was love at first sight. "You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince," she added. Sadly, Linda lost her prince last March. "We were very well matched. We never had a cross word between us, and I really cherish the five years we were together," she remembers, with sadness in her voice.
Whats the difference? Internationally known relationship expert and author David Coleman says, Here's the biggest difference. I've met so many people who met the traditional way who married out of obligation. He says people looking for a permanent relationship online can be more direct. It's basically buying a used car a human being. I was able to get on, check out all the things I wanted to know, and I said that's a darn good model with a little mileage. I'll take it.
His fiance Tina Razete agrees. She says after dating online, she felt that she knew Dave very well when they finally met for the first time. They're getting married next summer.
Kathleen and Troy are also cherishing their new beginning. Kathleen summarizes, "We don't wanna settle for less, and you do that when you're younger, but he's everything I could hope for. He's my fairy tale."
