Massive Mural Covers Up East Dayton Graffiti
DAYTON -- Fighting back against so-called graffiti artists, For weeks we've told you about how the East Dayton Graffiti Task Force plans to clean up the tags that are plaguing the city of Dayton.
A 170 foot long wall on Nassau Street in Dayton used to be covered in graffiti, but not anymore. Now a professional artist, Megan Smallwood, is well on her way painting over the eyesores and she says it's only the first of many graffiti cover up murals.
"It just used to look like a mess. Kids walk up and down here going to school and you just have to think, what are they thinking about the neighborhood," said Mike Schulz, who lives across the street.
Schulz and his wife helped kick start the project. They tired of looking at the tags across the street. An East Side resident herself, Megan volunteered her artistry, and began designing back in May.
"Rather than seeing something that's kind of nasty and jumbled together they see something cool and inspring and they start dreaming about the future and what we can do with dayton down the road," Smallwood said.
The mural takes you from the start of Dayton's history, from the first settlers, to the Wright Brother's era and the Great Flood. A few more steps and you're brought into present time. Then prepare for liftoff into the future, the mural depicts what Dayton could be in 30 years, complete with solar-powered monorails.
"It's beautiful imagery. So when the kids walk up there, I think they'll see downtown and have some dreams," Schultz said.
Smallwood is hoping to complete the mural in the next two weeks, but she could use a little help. If you would like to volunteer, contact the Graffiti Task Force at 333-7440.
DAYTON -- We've been telling you for weeks how Dayton's graffiti task force has been working with business owner and residents in East Dayton to clean up the tagging on buildings.
Friday afternoon, a local artist started turning a wall that used to be littered with graffiti into a work of art. The artist is donating her time and folks in the community are donating the materials for the mural. The artist says the mural will depict the history and future of Dayton.
