Some Sex Offenders Allowed to Trick-Or-Treat
CLARK COUNTY -- With Halloween now just around the corner, sheriff's offices begin their planning. Clark County announced it will increase patrols for Beggar's Night, and they are asking you to begin checking where the sex offenders in your neighborhood live.
"It's ridiculous. There should be a law," said Springfield mom Courtney Lavender.
But there isn't. In the state of Ohio, as long as a sex offender is meeting their check in requirements, unless a probation or parole officer tells an offender otherwise, they're allowed to participate in trick-or-treat.
"They are permitted to go out, they can pass out candy, they can trick-or-treat," said Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly.
Most parents didn't know that and most of them don't agree.
"As a tier 3, I don't think you should be able to hand out anything to any kind of kid," said Springfield father Demetrius Castle.
Sheriff Kelly did tell us the worse the sex offense, the higher the chance the parole officer will force them to stay indoors with the porch lights off on Halloween.
"There are people who are on parole for several years and their parole officer will tell them 'you better be home and you better have your lights out and I'm going to go check on you' and they do," said Kelly.
So is that good enough?
"Some parole officers are lenient and some aren't," said Castle.
Regardless of whether or not a sex offender is allowed to pass out candy to your kids, sheriffs want you to begin looking today at who is registered in your neighborhood. All you have to do is type in www.sheriffalerts.com find your state and your county and put in your address. Then you'll see every house where you don't want your children going.
"It's incumbent on parents or guardians to go out and trick-or-treat with the kids in your neighborhood and to know where these individuals live," said Kelly.
"As long as you're watching them there's not a chance that anyone will talk to kids as long as you're there," said Lavendar.
Some states have imposed stricter restrictions on sex offenders during Halloween hours ranging from "no passing out candy" to "no driving after dark." In some states, sex offenders could face up to a year in jail just for turning on a porch light during trick-or-treat hours.
