Museum Has No Heat, Artifacts in Jeopardy
XENIA--A museum filled with Ohio history is closed, due to no heat, and a board member said the artifacts are in danger because of the cold.
The sign on the door of the museum of the Ohio Soldiers' and Sailors Orphans Home/ Ohio Veterans Childrens' Home reads
"closed until further notice, no heat."
"We don't expect our visitors to freeze while they are inside." Mick Howard said. He is a museum board member and said the temperature inside the building is in the 40's during the day and dips down even lower at night.
"It's very chilly, and not a good place for artifacts."
Over the summer months, construction in the area took out the gas line that cut the heat to the building.
The heat was never turned back on, and now that the cooler weather is here, Howard said precious artifacts are in danger of being ruined because of condensation inside the frigid building
"We have so many old pictures and albums and old clothes. They absorb moisture and it will just break them down . And our gun collection, we fantastic specimens but with moisture, guns rust."
Howard said he's tried contacting the construction company, Kapp Construction, responsible for turning the heat back on but hasn't gotten anywhere.
He said there is a delay in the construction company turning in the right paperwork to get the line fixed.
"Apparently the proper documents weren't provided to the county to approve the new line to allow it to be energized with gas."
Howard said he is running out of time to save the priceless pieces of Ohio history
"I'm asking for some consideration and some help to get this rectified as soon as possible."
ABC 22/ FOX 45 NEWS tried contacting Kapp Construction about when the line will be fixed and when the heat will be returned to the museum, but have not heard back from them.
