Teen Accused of Setting Fire and Trying to Kill Parents

BUTLER COUNTY-- A 16 year old from Liberty Township is locked up in the Butler County Juvenile Detention center, accused of  trying to murder his parents by trying to lock them in rooms and setting their home on fire.

"This case should make your hair stand up on the back  of  your neck." Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said.

He said  Mitchell Simon, 16, had  elaborate plans and drawings in his bedroom plotting his parent's death.
The Sheriff said  Simon  used some sort of  accelerant  and set  his Tarragon Court  home on fire.

Jones said Simon tied the doors shut, where his parents were sleeping so they couldn't escape.

"It was premeditated. He just didn't do it like that. It was planned and to tie the doors.  That is serious." Sheriff Jones said.

Once the home was ablaze,  the teen ran from the house.

The  boys father was  able to escape by jumping  from a widow. His  mother was in another bedroom and  firefighters were able to rescue  her by using a ladder. Both parents were taken to the hospital.

Sheriff Jones said the teen returned to the scene where he admitted to the crime.

"This kid sets the fire and has no remorse. Comes back  to the scene,  and has no remorse what so ever."

"Its just got to be horrible to think your own son would do that."   Neighbor Jeanette Mindar said.

"Its just heartbreaking. My stomach  just turns to think what they are going through right  now." Mindar added.

Sheriff Jones said Simon had no criminal past.

"This kid is an honor roll student.  He is not from a poor part of town. Comes from a good family.  He' s never been in trouble in his whole life. He's just mean."

Sheriff Jones is recommending that Simon will be tried as an adult.
His next court appearance will be November 5.
