Beavercreek City Council Approves RTA Bus Stops

BEAVERCREEK -- Bus stops will be going up near the Fairfield Commons mall.

Beavercreek City Council approved the applications for three bus stops at Monday night's meeting.

It could be the beginning of the end of a two-year struggle to get RTA bus stops in Beavercreek, but the celebration certainly didn't come without a fight.

The night started with a peaceful protest outside city hall moments before Monday's meeting began.

"Do you want us to go wait for the bus," said one protester.

And once inside, person after person taking the podium, some for and some against.

The packed meeting, proof of the struggle between what some want and what others want to keep out of their city.

"I am voting to represent the majority of the Beavercreek residents who feel they are not being heard," said Deborah Wallace, Beavercreek City Council.

Wallace was one of two council members to vote against the approval.

And some of those who voted in favor of the stops, weren't happy doing so.

"I think the Federal Highway ruling, I think they coerced the council. I think they put our backs against the wall," Councilwoman Melissa Little said.

If council voted down the applications, they stood to lose millions in federal funding for roads.

That is something, protesters say, council should have known all along.

"Under the statute there's no excuse for ignorance of not knowing what the statute is when you take federal funds," said Ronnie Moreland.

And while tonight's approval is a battle won, for some it's still not over.

"We will not be satisfied until buses roll on Pentagon Boulevard," said Moreland.

A representative from RTA says he will be meeting with Beavercreek leaders later this week, and hopes to have the new stops up and running early next year.

Earlier coverage:

BEAVERCREEK -- The three proposed RTA bus stops near the Mall at Fairfield Commons are again the center of a major controversy.

The city council is voting Monday whether to approve of the applications for the bus stops.

The RTA has been trying to get Beavercreek Council to approve installing the three bus stops near the mall for the past two years.  The stops would be built on Pentagon Boulevard near the mall, Walmart and the Soin Medical Center.

People pushing for the bus stops say it will help job seekers and businesses in the area. Also, some veterans use the medical center. Those against it include parents who are worried about kids getting on the bus unchaperoned and hanging out at the mall.
