BRAC Cuts Coming to Wright-Patt in 2015
FAIRBORN -- On the heels of the shutdown furloughs, local leaders are already discussing how Wright-Patterson Air Force Base could be in for more instability.
The Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission, or BRAC, is recommending a new round of base closings as early as 2015.
To prepare, the Dayton Development Coalition held a meeting Wednesday to address the pending changes.
But what changes will be made are still unclear and that's why there's a sense of urgency on the Dayton BRAC Committee to get to work.
The news of potential cuts at Wright-Patt puts the community on edge.
"They failed all of us. Wright-Patt is the heart of this whole region, this whole community," Fairborn resident Bob Hannah said upon hearing the news.
"Efficiency cuts are going to have to happen. They are trying to do more with less," Jeff Hoagland, Dayton Development Coalition CEO, announced Wednesday.
Despite the expected BRAC cuts in 2015, local officials say they are discussing what new missions and projects can be brought to the base.
"Every opportunity I get I talk about leveraging what's here with other agencies and industry to address a specific mission," said Gen. Lester Lyles, of the Dayton Development Coalition.
Even without a direct plan of action yet, local officials are looking at the glass as half-full.
They also say they believe technology is going to be the golden ticket. They plan to use the state-of-the-art technology developing on the base to leverage new projects.
