Hidden Dangers in Child's Costumes
FAIRBORN -- A warning to parents about the hidden dangers that are lurking in your kids' costumes.
"It's supposed to be a fun time, you want to make sure that everybody is having fun," said Megan Lovett, as she and her son walk around Foy's Halloween Store in Downtown Fairborn.
"I like halloween," said her son Turner.
"You want to create memories for him," said Megan, "And you want them to be good memories."
"Trick or Treat!," said Turner.
Three-year-old Turner and his mom are on a mission.
"Where's the poop at?," said Turner.
To find the perfect practical joke, but the hidden dangers in costumes are a serious matter.
"Things like masks, very big shoes, long costumes, things like that can become hazards," said Jessica Saunders, Injury Prevention Coordinator for Dayton Children's Hospital.
All kids love a good scary mask, but the ones that cover their entire face can be dangerous by making it hard for them to breath.
"It's just going to make for a much more fun night if they're comfortable in their costumes," said Saunders.
Also, make sure the holes in the mask are big enough so they can see and have them wear a light colored costume and reflectors.
It's something Megan thinks about every beggar's night.
"You never know when you're outside there," she said, "There's a lot of people around and you want to make sure that you can see him and other people can see him."
And lastly, something not many people think about is making sure your child's costume won't catch on fire.
Look for something that says it's flame resistant.
"We've done demonstrations where a costume can go up in flames within seconds," said Saunders.
"It's not just about having fun but being safe too," said Megan.
"Happy Halloween!," said Turner.
Another great tip if you happen to make your kid's costume, use flame resistant fabrics like polyester and nylon.
