Community Reacts to Potential Austin Landing Cuts
MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- Major parts of the Austin Landing development are on hold, as township trustees are deadlocked in a vote to move forward with Phase II of the project.
"This is the Kroger's that I come to every week now, the Kohl's is good," said Elizabeth Woerner of Springboro. "They're moving even more things over here that are bringing us here."
More restaurants and more stores are bringing more and more people to Austin Landing.
A grand opening at the much-anticipated BJ's Brewhouse and the first of its kind in the area drive-through Panera.
On the way is a TJ Maxx and Home Goods, but that could be all.
"It's really disappointing, we're all looking forward to having things a little closer to home," said Woerner.
There is a battle brewing over Phase II of the project that included an ice rink, township park, parking garage, movie theater, office and retail space.
"The ice rink and the park would have been really nice," she said. "There isn't anything like that really in the area at all."
The developer, R.G. Properties wants to downsize, meaning no ice rink, no park, no parking garage, no movie theater and less retail space, saving $5 million for taxpayers.
"I wouldn't come as often," said Greg Picard of Miamisburg. "I think that they would be real jewels in the community to put those things in and to just table them like they're talking now, it would be, the potential would be lost."
Miami Township Trustees deadlocked on the revisions, putting the brakes on the project all together.
Residents, though, are hoping the trustees and developer will change their minds.
"There's a big population down here in Springboro, Franklin and Miamisburg," said Woerner, "So it would be really convenient and should get a lot of business."
One of the trustees was not at the meeting Tuesday, which means phase two will be talked about again by the township on October 8.
We also called R.G. Properties, and was told they did not want to comment.
