Mayoral Candidate Confronts City Commission About Senior Tax Credit
DAYTON -- A mayoral candidate challenged the Dayton City Commission to reinstate a tax credit promised to disabled and senior citizens.
Mayoral candidate A.J. Wagner says the reversal of the tax break is a broken promise, while the commission says it was a necessary move.
"In 2006, in order to pass the income tax levy they gave an incentive to seniors and the disabled and said if you vote we'll give you a tax break for eight years. And they didn't," Wagner said Wednesday.
Well, they did for six years, but in 2011 the tax break was lifted, a move members of the commission say was critical for keeping the city out of the red.
"I'd do it again, frankly, because it was the thing to do at the right time and when you talk about $9 million in state cuts being handed down that's what we had to do," Dayton City Commissioner and fellow Mayoral candidate Nan Whaley said.
The tax break brought $500,000 a year back to the city, which translates to $50 a year per person.
"Seniors! Tax time is a tough time and that $50 goes a long way for seniors," Dayton senior Creola Reese said passionately.
Despite the pointed words from Reese and Wagner, the commission seemed unmoved.
After the meeting A.J. Wagner said despite the cold reception from the commission, he's not done and will continue to fight to regain the tax break.
