More Speed Limit Changes Set for Local Highways
XENIA -- Starting Sunday, you'll be able to drive faster on some local highways. For the second time this year, the speed limit is rising on some Miami Valley highways from 65 mph to 70.
The speed limit changes are happening in rural areas like US 35 in Greene County near Jamestown and State Route 68 just outside of Springfield.
"On the 35 bypass, which generally goes to the east side of Xenia out toward the outlet malls on the full lane," said Sgt. Paul Lezotte, from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Post in Greene County.
Many drivers who travel often on US 35 are excited about the changes.
"It will just make the commute go a lot faster. I believe it will help everybody in the long run as long as everybody maintains that speed limit, " said Frank Riley of Northern Kentucky.
"I think it's a great idea. I think 60 is too slow, I think 65 is too slow when you're driving out there," said Rich Allen of Kettering.
"Other states have speed limits 70 or above, sometimes 75 and people are going 70 anyway so I think it's OK," said Leslie Harris of Beavercreek.
While ABC 22 News found many people who were looking forward to the speed limit increase, some think it's a bad idea.
"Actually I'm against it, really, because you know there's a lot of traffic through there and people sometimes have to switch lanes and I think it will be better to stick with the speed limit that it is now because if someone switches lanes you know it can cause accidents," said Remick Ramsey of Dayton.
Although the changes happen on Sunday, you may not see new signs up until Oct. 4.
